Key Stage 3

 

Year 7

All pupils will follow the National Curriculum for Science using the Exploring Science scheme as a framework.

Pupils will cover 12 modules of content: 

 

Each module will have ‘Working Scientifically’ and ‘Literacy and Communication’ skills in taught in them.

Assessment is made on end of topic tests and end of term tests.

 

Year 8

Key Stage 4

All pupils will be working on AQA GCSEs in Science from Year 9 to Y11. The GCSEs have terminal exams in year eleven and whilst there is no formal coursework, there are required practicals which can be assessed within the exams. These required practicals can be found on the VLE in the Science section.

 Pupils will either follow one of two routes. 

1. Combined Science: Trilogy (Double award)

This is assessed through six exam papers of one hour fifteen minutes duration (seven and half hours of assessment). 

2. Separate Sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics (Triple award).

This is assessed through six exam papers of one hour forty-five minutes duration (ten and a half hours of assessment). 

Both routes cover exactly the same modules and both have a higher and foundation tier of entry. 

Irrespective of the strand undertaken by a pupil, both courses allow entry into the Sixth Form to study pure Science A levels. The exact criteria for entry to study A level sciences will be published during the course of the year in which your son/daughter begins year eleven.

Key Stage 5 

A-Level Biology 

Exam Board: AQA 

Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, ranging from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems and from micro-organisms to mammoths. Biology is a dynamic subject never far from the headlines. 

In the first year you will study 4 main topics:

 

 

 

In addition will there are numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to link theory to reality, and equip you with the essential practical skills you need. Assessment of practical skills in this AS specification will be by written exams only with 15% of the marks in the papers relating to practical work. 

AS is assessed by two written papers both of which are 1 hour 30 minutes ,worth 75 marks and comprising 50% each of the AS qualification 

Year two helps you build on that firm foundation and at A level you will study:

 

At A-level you will assessed by 3 written papers, each of 2 hours. 

Practical assessments have been divided into those that can be assessed in written exams and those that can only be directly assessed whilst students are carrying out experiments. A-level grades will be based only on marks from written exams. A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A-level. This will be assessed by teachers and will be based on direct observation of your competency in a range of skills that are not assessable in written exams.

 

A-Level Chemistry 

Exam board: OCR 

Course: OCR level 3 Advanced GCE in Chemistry A.

This is a linear two year course with 3 exams covering 6 modules (module content and examinations are outlined in the tables below).

A level Paper 3 – General and Practical Principles in Physics 

120 marks         2 hours 30 minutes 

• All topics across the full A level specification.

• Half of the paper will also focus on testing students’ knowledge and understanding of 

  practical skills and techniques.

40% of A level

There are 16 core practicals that cover all of the 12 techniques required for the practical competency measure.

• Knowledge of all core practicals can be tested within exam papers.

• Core practicals form part of the practical competency assessment.
