Serving the Common Good

As mentioned previously St Mary’s we have a mission as part of the wider Catholic Church and to be able to live out this identity we aim to serve the common good in our localities and in our wider world. Our School Mission statement says that we aim to be a “Catholic Community Dedicated to achieving excellence for all”. With this Mission, rooted in our Catholic Faith, we aspire through prayer and service to embrace Jesus’ call in the Parable of the Sheep and Goat; by ensuring we teach each other what it means to serve by our example.

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)

We seek to embrace and contribute to the Mission of Church, to proclaim the Gospel of Christ and bring each person closer to our loving Father through the power of the Holy Spirit. By recognising the dignity of all, recognising opportunities to imitate Christ and helping us to love and serve others. We aim encourage one another to give in service in as much as we give of our resources through charity fundraising, giving of our time to charities and to others and organising events throughout the year to raise awareness of charities and contribute to their cause.

‘Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:17)

As we know St Mary’s was inspired by and founded by the Sisters St Mary of Namur. We wish to be inspired in their legacy to continue to follow their essential desire in Justice and Peace echoed throughout the Catholic teachings.

"We, Sisters of St Mary of Namur an international congregation, respond to the burning needs of the marginalized, the excluded, refugees and all our brothers and sisters across the world, disfigured by poverty and rejection and scarred by contempt and humiliation. Implicit in our exchanges and choices is our active commitment to non-violence and critical issues. Inspired by our faith and built on Gospel values, of compassion, justice and hospitality we strongly support endeavours through prayer, service and advocacy to prevent the abuse and exploitation of the most vulnerable of our world." (SSMN Website)

Over the years we as a community have supported many different Charities locally and across the world including CAFOD, Cancer research UK, Grove Cottage, Cardinal Hume Centre, The Passage, The Daniella Ruggiero Scholarship fund, Mind, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust, Operation Christmas Child and many more. We have had events ranging from Cake sales, to form group fundraising, to our Charity week event during Lent. We continue to aim to stretch our awareness and time to ensure we as a school support those that are most vulnerable in our world.
